Linking Your Knowledge Organiser to Classwork

A Knowledge Organiser isn’t meant to sit in a folder gathering dust, it’s a living tool that should work alongside your lessons. The more you connect it to what you’re doing in class, the more powerful your learning becomes.

Why Link It?

Linking your Knowledge Organiser to your classwork helps you:

  • Reinforce learning during and after lessons.

  • Spot where you’re confident and where you need more practice.

  • Prepare better for quizzes, homework, and exams.

It’s like having a built-in summary of every topic you cover.

During Lessons: Keep It Close

If you’re allowed, keep your Knowledge Organiser out on your desk:

  • Use it to find keywords during note-taking.

  • Tick off key concepts as your teacher explains them.

  • Highlight anything that feels new or tricky in the moment.

This keeps your brain focused on what’s important and prevents overload.

After Lessons: Check What’s Covered

As soon as you can after class:

  • Go through your Knowledge Organiser and highlight anything you just learned.

  • Use a coloured pen or star system to show what’s been taught.

  • Add quick notes or reminders in the margins if something was explained differently in class.

This helps you build up a full picture – no gaps, no surprises later.

Homework & Revision: Use It Like a Guide

Before you start a homework task, check the Knowledge Organiser:

  • What key terms should appear in your answers?

  • Are there diagrams or processes you need to include?

  • What have you already revised in class?

Using it as a checklist keeps your work accurate and focused.

Keep the Connection Going

The best students return to their Knowledge Organiser weekly:

  • Can you explain today’s class topic using the info on the sheet?

  • What terms are showing up again and again? (That’s a clue they’ll be on the exam.)

  • What haven’t you covered yet in class? (Prepare early!)

Knowledge doesn’t stick if you only see it once, keep looping back to it.

By linking your Knowledge Organiser to classwork, you build deeper understanding, stronger memory, and better results; one lesson at a time.
