Before You Study: Health & Well-being

Before diving into any study or revision guide, it’s important to check in with yourself. Studying is about more than just memorising facts or doing past papers – it’s about showing up at your best. And to do that, your health and well-being need to come first.

Your Brain Needs a Break Sometimes

Your brain is like a muscle – it needs rest, fuel, and recovery. When you’re tired, hungry, or stressed, your ability to concentrate, remember, and think clearly drops. No revision strategy will work if you’re running on empty. Before you study, ask yourself:

  • Have I eaten something nutritious?

  • Have I had enough sleep?

  • Am I feeling overwhelmed or calm?

  • Do I need a short walk or stretch before I start?

Even 5 – 10 minutes of movement, fresh air, or just breathing quietly can refocus your brain and lower stress levels.

Routines Are Your Best Friend

Studying at random times or leaving everything to the last minute creates anxiety. Instead, build a routine that works for your life. Choose times of the day when you feel most alert. Slot in breaks. And most importantly, stick to a plan that leaves room for hobbies, family time, and rest.

💡 Try this:
Work in short bursts; like 25 minutes of focused work, followed by a 5-minute break (the Pomodoro Technique). After four of these, take a longer break. This keeps your energy up and your brain fresh.

Talk It Out

If you’re feeling anxious or unmotivated, that’s normal. Revision can feel overwhelming, especially when there’s pressure involved. But talking to someone – a parent, teacher, friend, or tutor – can ease that burden. You don’t have to go through revision alone.

Sleep Isn’t Optional

Sleep helps your brain store everything you’ve learned. Late-night cramming might seem productive, but it’s actually doing more harm than good. Aim for 8 hours of sleep. That’s when your brain files away everything you revised and when you’re brain is fully rested to learn more.

Comparison Kills Confidence

Everyone studies differently. Just because someone else is posting their colour-coded notes online doesn’t mean your way is wrong. Your journey is your own. Focus on progress, not perfection.

Before You Start a Study Session, Ask Yourself

  • Am I rested?

  • Have I eaten?

  • Do I know what I’m working on today?

  • Have I set a timer or plan for breaks?

  • Am I being kind to myself?

Taking care of your well-being isn’t a distraction from studying – it’s a foundation for success. When your mind and body are looked after, everything else becomes that much easier.
