Before You Study: Check Your Environment
Where you study can have a huge impact on how well you focus, how much you remember, and how motivated you feel. A calm, organised space can make all the difference in how confident and prepared you feel going into each study session.
Find Your Study Zone
Not every space is created equal. Studying in bed might feel comfortable, but it signals to your brain that it’s time to rest – not to focus. Try to find a space that is:
-
Quiet and free from distractions
-
Well-lit (natural light is best!)
-
Tidy and uncluttered
-
Comfortable, but not too cosy
Even if you don’t have a perfect desk setup, a clear table with a chair and good lighting is a great place to start.
💡 Tip: If you can’t avoid noise, try listening to gentle instrumental music or white noise to block out background distractions.
Hide the Distractions
Phones, social media, notifications – they pull your attention without you even noticing. Before you start studying, do a quick environment check:
-
Is your phone on silent or out of reach?
-
Have you closed unnecessary tabs or apps?
-
Are you studying in a space where people won’t interrupt you?
Some students use apps like Forest, Cold Turkey, or Focus Keeper to stay on track by limiting distractions during revision time.
Clear Space, Clear Mind
A messy environment can create a messy mindset. You don’t need a spotless space, but a quick 2-minute tidy-up before you study can help you feel more in control. Throw away old papers, clear your workspace, and only keep out what you need for the session.
Stock Your Study Station
Having everything you need within reach helps avoid unnecessary breaks or distractions. Before you begin, make sure you’ve got:
-
Pens, paper, textbooks or revision guides
-
A water bottle
-
A healthy snack
-
Your study plan or to-do list
Try not to bring your whole kitchen! Keep it simple and functional.
Make It a Habit
The more you return to the same study space, the more your brain starts to associate that space with focus and learning. It becomes a kind of mental shortcut: “I’m in this seat, which means it’s time to revise.” With time, it becomes easier to get in the zone.
Before You Start a Study Session, Ask Yourself:
-
Am I in a quiet and focused environment?
-
Do I have everything I need to get started?
-
Is my phone or any distractions out of reach?
-
Do I feel ready to focus?
You don’t need the fanciest desk or the quietest house. What matters is that you create a space that feels calm, organised, and set up to help you succeed. Your environment is the launchpad for every smart study session you do.
