Computers measure the size of data using bits and bytes. A bit can have a value of 0 or 1, while 8 bits make 1 byte. For larger amounts of data, Edexcel uses units based on powers of 1024. The most important units are:

For example, 1 GiB is 1024 MiB, and 1 MiB is 1024 KiB. To convert between units, multiply when moving to a smaller unit and divide when moving to a larger unit.

The terms kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB) and gigabyte (GB) are sometimes used for powers of 1000, particularly when describing storage devices. The binary units used here are different: KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB use powers of 1024.

You should use the units and conversion factors given in the question. You do not need to worry about the different conventions used by manufacturers or other resources.

Remember

8 bits = 1 byte

1024 bytes = 1 KiB

1024 KiB = 1 MiB

1024 MiB = 1 GiB

1024 GiB = 1 TiB
