Back to School: How to Help Your Child Prepare for GCSE Computer Science

September always seems to creep up on us, doesn’t it? One moment it’s summer holidays, the next we’re shopping for new uniforms, sharpening pencils, and trying to get everyone back into a routine. For many families, this time of year feels exciting, but also a little overwhelming.

At Sullivan Tutor Academy, we’ve been preparing for September for weeks. Behind the scenes, Harvey has been polishing lesson plans, creating new interactive quizzes, and setting up homework tasks so that every student walks into the new term feeling ready. In lessons, we use The Sullivan Method – our very own teaching style (backed by research) designed to take the stress out of Computer Science and help students grow in confidence from day one.

But preparation doesn’t just happen on our side. There are simple, low-stress things parents and students can do at home to make the return to school feel a little smoother.

For students, a strong start could mean:

  • Flicking back through last year’s notes to refresh their memory on the basics.
  • Revisiting key Computer Science topics like binary, algorithms, or logic gates.
  • Setting one or two small goals for the term (not just “get a 9” but something SMART like “feel confident answering pseudocode questions before term 2”).
  • Easing back into a study routine with short 15–20 minute sessions, rather than big cramming blocks.
  • Our Summer Jumpstart Computer Science course could be a great way to refresh memory before the new year starts – Check it out here

For parents, support can look like:

  • Creating a calm, distraction-free space for homework and study.
  • Checking in with your child about how they feel about going back – excitement, nerves, or a mix of both.
  • Encouraging balance: making sure there’s downtime as well as study time.
  • Seeking out support early if your child seems unsure; sometimes a little tutoring boost at the start prevents bigger struggles later on.

What we always remind parents is that September is a fresh start. It’s not about perfection; it’s about giving children the confidence to begin the year with curiosity and motivation. A few small steps now can make a huge difference in how your child feels about Computer Science (and school in general) over the months ahead.

At Sullivan Tutor Academy, we’re excited to be welcoming our new groups in September, and we can’t wait to see the progress our students will make. If you’d like to give your child a head start this term, why not book a free consultation with us? Together, we can make sure this school year begins on the strongest possible note.
